This Wednesday, July 26, the U.S. House Committee on Veterans' Affairs is holding a hearing on H.R.542, the Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act of 2023, sponsored by Rep. Julia Brownley (D-CA-26). This legislation would improve and expand home and community-based services for disabled and elderly veterans, ensuring they are able to remain in their homes to receive the care they need.
Specifically, the bill would raise the cap on how much the VA can pay for the cost of home care from 65% of the cost of nursing home care to 100%. For many catastrophically disabled veterans, the cost of care can quickly exceed this 65% limit. This bill would provide veterans with the choice to remain in their homes, the less costly site of care.
