Village of Skokie
The Village of Skokie is Chicago’s immediate neighbor to the north, and as such, it is a suburb with a very urban feel. Many Skokie streets are a continuation of the Chicago street grid and the village is served by the Chicago Transit Authority as well. Originally a farming community, Skokie was incorporated as Niles Centre in 1888. During the real estate boom of the 1920s, many two- and three-flat apartment buildings sprang up, along with a great number of Chicago-style bungalows. Large-scale development was halted during The Great Depression and a village-renaming campaign began. In a referendum on November 15, 1940, residents chose the Native American name "Skokie" (inspired by the Potawatomi word for “marsh”) over the name “Devonshire." Skokie’s proximity to downtown Chicago and its charming community atmosphere made it a popular location for young families to settle in after World War II. Consequently, the village developed commercially, an example being the Old Orchard Shopping Center. Comfort Keepers has been privileged to serve Skokie families since 2000.
