Chicago: Forest Glen
The Forest Glen neighborhood on the far Northwest Side of Chicago is a quiet community that is home to many city administrators, police and fire department officials, lawyers, and judges. Bordered by the Chicago River to the north, the area features considerable green space in the form of forest preserve groves, golf courses and cemeteries. Located approximately 10 miles north of Chicago’s Loop, Forest Glen was once a camping and hunting territory for the Miami and Potawatomi Indians. After the founding of the city of Chicago in 1833, a variety of distant lands were annexed into the city proper – usually due to the expansion of commuter lines. True to form, by the 1880s, a railroad stop had been created in Forest Glen. The establishment of the first church soon followed, along with sporadic residential development. The robust economy of the 1920s helped the area blossom into a desirable home for many middle-class families of English, Swedish, German, Irish and Czech descent. (This European influence is represented in the architecture of many of the area’s single-family homes and its irregular street grid.) Today, its residents are primarily white and Roman Catholic. Comfort Keepers has been serving seniors and families in Forest Glen since 2000.
