Village of Wheeling
Incorporated in 1894, Wheeling began as an overnight stop for travelers from Chicago who were headed to the Wisconsin Territory via the overland trail now known as Milwaukee Avenue. Farmers took advantage of the area's fertile soil and growing overland transportation network and began to export crops. Railroad workers contributed to the village’s growth by patronizing its saloons. In 1917, the Knights of Columbus built the Columbian Country Club (later called Chevy Chase). The club and 18-hole golf course changed ownership in the 1930s and became a gambling establishment. After World War II, Wheeling emerged as a center for industry and commerce (complete with its own small airport), which increased its residential growth as well. Today, the road that was once dotted with small inns and taverns in the 1830s has become renowned as Wheeling’s Restaurant Row.
