Village of Riverwoods
In present day Riverwoods, visitors can still find maple trees that bare cuts where the Potawatomi Indians tapped them for syrup. In the mid-1800s European pioneers began to settle in the area. By 1885, the Wisconsin Central Railroad had added a spur line with a final stop near Deerfield Road and Milwaukee Avenue. This turned Riverwoods into a popular weekend destination, where Chicago residents could hike out to the Des Plaines River and fish or visit Clybourn Park to enjoy a roller coaster, bowling alleys, a dance pavilion and beer stands. Edward Ryerson purchased a cabin on ten riverfront acres in 1928 and his Brushwood Farm estate in 1939 -- land which was turned into a forest preserve in 1966. Today, Riverwoods is home to Discover Financial Services, more than 40 "Prairie Modernist" mid-century homes (designed by Edward Humrich) and the Orphans of the Storm animal shelter. Comfort Keepers has been serving the Riverwoods community since 2000.
