Village of Northbrook
The land that is today the village of Northbrook was home to a close-knit farming community in the late 1800s. At the time of its incorporation as “Shermerville” in 1901, it had 300 residents, 60 houses and five somewhat rowdy saloons. A re-branding contest bestowed the name of Northbrook on the village in 1921 and beautification efforts ensued. In the 1930s, the Forest Preserve District purchased of 112 acres of Des Plaines River land, work began on the Skokie Marsh, and the WPA planted elm trees throughout the village. Present day Northbrook boasts the River Trail Nature Center, award-winning school districts, a flourishing public library and the upscale Northbrook Court mall. Director John Hughes, a native of Northbrook, further immortalized the town in settings for several of his movies. Comfort Keepers has been serving Northbrook families since 2000.
