Originally home to the Potawatomi Indians, the city of Lake Forest was founded in 1861 as a stop for travelers making their way south to Chicago. During the early 1900s, captains of industry built their magnificent estates in Lake Forest, and the Howard Van Doren Shaw-designed Market Square debuted in 1916 as the first commercial center. Today, as a modern city that grew up in tandem with Lake Forest College, Lake Forest boasts a thriving arts scene, the headquarters of several Fortune 500 companies, 29 miles of beachfront recreational trails and the Chicago Bears training facility.
