Village of Glencoe
Located 24 miles north of Chicago’s Loop, the village of Glencoe is bordered by Lake Michigan, the Cook County Forest Preserve and the Glencoe Golf Course. The origin of the village's name is somewhat uncertain; some attribute it to an early resident, Matthew Coe; others say it is named for the area of Scotland of the same name. Glencoe’s tree-lined residential streets include a broad variety of architectural styles dating from the village’s incorporation in 1869 to present day. Many of the homes were designed by noteworthy architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, Howard Van Doren Shaw, Robert Seyfarth, Keck & Keck, and others. (Given this architectural bounty, it's no surprise that scenes from the John Hughes films “Sixteen Candles” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” were filmed in the village in the 1980s.) Featuring a quaint downtown, beautiful beaches, the Chicago Botanic Garden and the regionally acclaimed Writers Theatre, Glencoe offers much in the way of relaxation and entertainment for visitors and residents alike.
