History and Culture

Campbell is a city situated in the West Valley area in Santa Clara County. In 1777 the Spanish explorers founded the Mission Santa Clara de Asis and the Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe and with this began the history of Campbell and overall California be recorded. Before this, the area was inhabited by the Ohlone Native Americans who lived on hunting, fishing and gathering agricultural stock.

After Mexican separation from Spain in 1821 the whole of this region got divided into various ranches and agricultural production began to spring up in various farms and mills.

In such a time Benjamin Campbell came to California with his father William Campbell in 1846. In 1851 Campbell bought 160 acres of land from a Mission for building a farmhouse and cultivating wheat. This area later became the core of downtown Campbell and the town got its name from the founder Benjamin Campbell himself.

Gradually the agricultural production increased a lot in the surrounding areas. The Campbells and other ranchers allowed the South Pacific Coast Railroad to use their land for facilitating easy transport of agricultural production to outer regions. In this line with the establishment of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 and the agricultural depot Campbell Station in 1886, the town of Campbell became a hub of booming agricultural activity.

During the 1890s newer technologies like advanced canneries boosted up agricultural production even more. Gradually the production farm owners started to form powerful unions and cooperation and the agricultural industrial growth continued well beyond the incorporation of the town in 1952.

After the incorporation with the advent of modern tech-based industries and lifestyle, the farms and orchards gradually gave way to modern high tech businesses, highways, homes, and industries. But even after that Campbell still retains its perfect small town vibration pretty perfectly.
